Ποιος άνθρωπος που έχει διαβάσει την Οδύσσεια, θα μπορούσε να κάνει μια τέτοια δήλωση;
Αν της φαίνεται δύσκολο, της συνιστώ να διαβάσει το έργο της συγγραφέως Marilu Oliva με τίτλο ‘The Odyssey: Told by Circe, Penelope, Calypso and the Others’’,ένα έργο που επικεντρώνεται ακριβώς στην παρουσίαση της Οδύσσειας μέσω των γυναικών που πρωταγωνιστούν σε αυτό.
Οδύσσεια;
2. Πως κρίνουν την κατά επιλογή του σεναριογράφου-σκηνοθέτη απουσία από την πλοκή της ταινίας, των ρόλων της Ναυσικάς και της Αρήτης; Σχετίζεται ή όχι η απουσία αυτή από την ξεκάθαρη αναφορά στην ‘’Φιλοξενία’’ και στο τι ακριβώς υποχρεώσεις γεννά η φιλοξενία ενός ξένου σε έναν διαφορετικό τόπο, όσο αφορά τον σεβασμό στα Ήθη και Έθιμα του τόπου από τον ξένο φιλοξενούμενο;
3. Είναι λογικό ένα Πανεπιστήμιο όπως το Yale να μην κάνει στους σπουδαστές του ούτε μια απλή αναφορά στην ύπαρξη του Ομήρου και των έργων του (Ιλιάδα και Οδύσσεια);
English text:
I
must confess from the very beginning that I have no expectation that any
Hollywood movie production would treat any work of ancient Greek literature
with the seriousness it deserves. The chasm in quality, but above all the chasm
in the very conception of quality, between the ancient Greek writers/poets/dramatists
on the one hand, and contemporary Hollywood screenwriters and directors on the
other, is so big, that not even the faintest hope of any convergence between
these two vastly disparate worlds can be reasonably entertained.
Nevertheless, I would like to offer my perspective on director Nolan's 2026 film Odyssey, which began its theatrical run these past few days.
I shall avoid revealing any spoilers, in order to focus instead on just how markedly different the famous director's approach is to the very essence of Homer's own treatment - Odysseus's nostos (or homecoming). Those who wish may watch the film or consult its reviews.
I will simply note, for the history of this ‘’review’’ , that Nolan's approach reads far more like an ode to American soldiers returning from US wars and the traumatic experiences they carry back with them, than it does to the central theme of the Odyssey, namely the nostos for homeland (desire to return to your homeland).
I would like, however, to focus on and comment upon a particularly ill-intentioned piece of criticism levelled by the actress Lupita Nyong'o, who portrays Helen of Sparta.
Concerning this actress, for some time prior, a futile controversy dominated the discourse over whether she, being of African descent, is entitled to play Helen of Sparta, and whether this casting choice shows due respect to Homer and to Greek culture. For my part, this "controversy" struck me as utterly pointless and devoid of substance, and I never had any desire to comment on or participate in that discussion. The Greeks gave birth to Τheatre, and in its earliest years, the roles of women were performed by men. Any actor may play any role, and will ultimately be judged solely on the quality of their performance.
What I would like very much to comment upon, however, is the statement made by this particular actress regarding "the observation she would make to Homer, if they were to watch the film together."
During a television interview conducted as part of the film's promotional campaign, the actress was asked: "What would you say to Homer, if you were to watch the film together?"
Her response was widely broadcast and served only to intensify the already heated controversy surrounding her role as "Helen of Sparta"
Her answer was, in essence: she would ask him how he feels about the fact that the screen time of women roles in the film is greater than the ‘’story time’’ that he gave to women role on his work, the Odyssey.
The exact wording of her statement is available here.
This statement provoked a storm of reactions, both from her supporters and her detractors. The firsts cheered vociferously, proclaiming that she had "put an ancient misogynist in his place," while the seconds shrieked in outrage that "she has no right to pass judgement on Homer."
I should emphasise that perhaps the most compelling argument regarding whether she has any right to judge Homer would actually be that, according to yet another statement of her own, she had no knowledge whatsoever of Homer or the Odyssey before being cast in the film—she had never even heard of them (this statement took place in a article of Elle magazine article on May 2026). This is something very disappointed, when you read at her CV and discovers that she is a graduate of famous Yale….
In any case, however, and setting aside the question of whether she does or does not have the right to criticize Homer, we are obliged to determine whether her accusation concerning the role of women in the Odyssey actually holds any validity whatsoever.
For those of us who do not just ‘’have hear about the Odyssey’’ but have actually read the Home’s Epic Story, this statement came as a profound shock, chiefly because it lays bare this particular actress's blatant ignorance of the ancient Epic itself.
What person who has actually read the Odyssey could possibly make such a statement?
Everyone who has read the Odyssey will readily recognize that the roles of Woman—as a gender—within the Homer's Story in Odyssey, are numerous, substantial, magnificent and pivotal, both in terms of the plot and in terms of the story's development.
Who is the "God" that assumes a leading role in the epic, appearing more frequently than any other Gods, and protecting not only Odysseus but also his son Telemachus? The goddess Athena.
Who is Odysseus's greatest "adversary" in his homeward journey? Calypso, who, out of the ten years of his return, detains him against his will for seven of them.
Who is Odysseus's greatest ally in his return? The Queen and the Princess of the Phaeacians, Arete and Nausica.
Who is Odysseus's most faithful servant, the very first to recognize him upon his return? The woman Eurycleia.
And of course, let us not forget Penelope, Circe, Anticlea, and all the other female figures who starting at the Homer’s Story.
When someone has read the Odyssey and is aware of just how significant a role of Women—as a gender—play both within the work itself and within the narrative arc of the story, a statement such as that made by Ms Lupita Nyong'o strikes one as utterly bewildering.
Everyone could realises just how irrelevant and misplaced this statement truly is, when he watches the film and observes that significant female roles from the Epic are entirely absent from Nolan's screenplay.
For example, Nausica and Arete are completely absent from the film.
Whereas Homer grants these two women a role of considerable importance, Nolan chooses to erase them entirely from his screenplay.
Three entire rhapsodies—out of the twenty-four that comprise the Odyssey—Homer devotes to these two Women, Nausica and Arete, and through them he presents an exploration of the concept of "Philoxenia’’ (hospitality for immigrants) that may very well be the very reason why the Hollywood screenplay would have wished to bury any reference to this theme in the depths of oblivion.
In rhapsodies Z, H and Θ, Odysseus arrives at the island of the Phaeacians, encounters Nausica—daughter of Arete and Alcinous, the royal couple of the land—and is invited by the young princess to the palace. Along the way, Odysseus asks Nausica to inform him of the Customs observed by the inhabitants of the country, for as a "immigrant" he does not wish unwittingly to commit any act that would not accord with the Ethics and Morality of the local people—how topical theme in an era when the surge of mass immigration of peoples bearing different cultural Morality into Western societies is beginning to undermine the very foundations of local communities with respect to the institutions of Hospitality, Immigration and Coexistence.
Nausica subsequently informs Odysseus, within the course of the Epic, that in their land tradition requires that Odysseus first show his respect to the Queen and not to the King—which Odysseus indeed does, thereby earning the esteem of the royal couple and of the royal court. How topical theme, in an era that immigrants from Islamic societies show no respect to women in western countries, and the Woke Culture force us to ‘’respect their religion and their culure....’'
These two roles, so significant not only for the progression of the narrative but above all for the essence of the Story and the messages that Homer wanted to promote to his audience—these roles director-screenwriter Nolan has entirely erased from his film.
And it is a matter of considerable astonishment that the actress Ms Lupita Nyong'o should have made such a statement—a criticism directed at the Homeric Epic—precisely at the moment when the Hollywood famous director-screenwriter himself has chosen to curtail the "female presence" in his own film.
To Ms Lupita Nyong'o, I would recommend to read Homer's Odyssey.
If she find that too daunting, I would recommend that she read the book of the author Marilù Oliva, entitled The Odyssey: Told by Circe, Penelope, Calypso and the Others—a work that focuses precisely on presenting the Odyssey through the women who starting prominently within it.
I would also ask those who found her statement "charming," or "clever," or "feminist" in its assessment of the role of women in Homer's work, to answer me the following:
1. Is there any other work in the entirety of human culture, from that era or even from a period slightly later than Homer's Odyssey, that features not merely a greater but even an equal degree of participation by female roles in its narrative as does the Odyssey?
2. How do they assess the deliberate omission, on the part of the screenwriter-director, from the film's narrative of the roles of Nausica and Arete? Is this omission related, or not, to the explicit treatment of "Philoxenia’’ - Hospitality to immigrants and to the precise obligations that the hospitality of a foreigner in a foreign land entails, with respect to the respect owed by the foreign guest to the Mores and Customs of the host country?
3. Is it reasonable for a university such as Yale not to afford its students even the most cursory reference to the existence of Homer and his works—the Iliad and the Odyssey?
I do not recommend the film. For many reasons. Just as I did not recommend Troy with Brad Pitt, or *300* (they present King of Kings Xerxes as a Drug Queen).
I believe that by this time next year, this film will have been forgotten, and no one will any longer be concerning themselves with it.
But I wanted to write the above text, because I believe that Ms Lupita Nyong'o has committed a misstep that will haunt her for years to come, and only if she comes forward and issues a public apology will she be able to move past it and continue her career.
I would also like to emphasise that, in my pont view, the famous director Mr Nolan did not set out to make a film dedicated to Homer's Odyssey; rather, he sought to create a film that serves as an ode to American soldiers returning to the United States from wars, carrying with them their psychological problems. Homer's Odyssey is centre upon the nostos to one's homeland—the longing to return to homeland. Nolan's Odyssey, by contrast, is centre upon the psychological trauma that a soldier carries with him from the atrocities he committed in war. The title "Odyssey" is employed metaphorically. The scene with Calypso, in which she administers psychiatric medication to Odysseus in order to make him "forget his horrific memories," is a clear allegory.
This text—for the first time on this Blog—I am translating into English, in case any non-Greek reader should wish to read it.
